For over 16 years, Energy Traders Europe and Commodities People have worked hand in hand to connect, inform, and strengthen the energy trading community. In this latest discussion, Marie Pégoud-Féjoz, Content Lead, Energy & Commodities, Commodities People, sat down with Stuart Beeston, Secretary of the Operations Committee at Energy Traders Europe, to explore the association’s strategic priorities for 2025 and the role of the operations committee in driving collaboration and innovation across member firms.
Stuart outlined three core priorities for the year ahead: ensuring interoperability of standards, advancing e-invoicing initiatives in line with European Union requirements, and updating standards to align with evolving market trends. He pointed to progress on aligning the electronic settlement matching standard with e-invoicing needs, as well as ongoing work on regulatory reporting standards and exchange-traded derivatives. Looking ahead, he encouraged members to participate actively in setting the committee’s 2026 priorities, highlighting the importance of supporting open markets through interoperable standards.
Beyond these initiatives, Stuart reflected on the committee’s broader role in addressing members’ operational needs and monitoring emerging trends, from power purchase agreement standardisation to the carbon border adjustment mechanism. He also discussed the slower adoption of innovation in post-trade processes, attributing it to the sector’s cautious nature and reliance on factual accuracy, factors that have limited the uptake of AI in particular.
Looking forward to Energy Trading Week Europe, Stuart expressed his enthusiasm for chairing the ETOT track, describing it as a unique platform for knowledge sharing and challenging assumptions. He noted the event’s distinctive atmosphere, which fosters open, provocative discussions among traders, service providers, and software firms.
As Energy Traders Europe continues to set the agenda for operational excellence and market innovation, its 2025 priorities signal a strong focus on preparing members for the challenges and opportunities of a rapidly changing energy landscape.
