In this latest discussion, Ben Hillary, Managing Director of Commodities People, sat down with Mark Copley, CEO of Energy Traders Europe, to reflect on the association’s achievements and share insights on the opportunities and challenges ahead.
Mark pointed to the successful review of the EFET General Agreement as a major milestone, securing its relevance for the next 20 years. He also highlighted the association’s crucial work on financial regulation, particularly in relation to its recent response to the European Commission’s consultation on the review of commodity derivatives markets and its efforts to monitor and safeguard Europe’s energy markets.
Looking forward, Mark did not shy away from addressing the political pressures reshaping energy policy. He emphasised the vital role of trading in delivering security, affordability, and decarbonisation, while calling for stronger leadership and collaboration to ensure Europe’s competitiveness. From hydrogen and green certificates to the future of carbon pricing and cross-border trading, the conversation underscored both the challenges and the vast potential of Europe’s energy landscape.
With shifting market dynamics and new proposals on the horizon, Mark described the need to be both reactive and bold in long-term strategy.
